creativity as an outlet

Every neurodiverse individual needs an outlet. A place, activity, or ritual to decompress from the gravity of life’s daily demands.

About four years ago, I began painting. I’ve always leaned toward art. I loved to draw as a child and have picked up several crafts as hobbies throughout adulthood. In true ADHD spirit, those hobbies are usually very short-lived.

It started with taking a workshop at the local arts center. It is guided by a professional artist. Everyone works on their own projects and he provides input as he meanders around the class and works on his own projects.

I do not have original works of art inspiring me. I paint from photographs, very often with people or pets as subjects. I have given most of my paintings as gifts to family and friends.

Every Tuesday night, I pop in my AirPods, turn on a favorite podcast, and paint for 2.5 hrs. The class can sometimes be quite chatty. I have typically spent my entire day at work chatting, so tend to keep to myself unless someone speaks directly to me.

This is my zen time. This is my time.

I think painting has become the best outlet for me because it allows for creativity while also being able to see through the completion of a work. I produce something from this hobby. I can make people smile with this hobby.

Find your outlet. Try a bunch of different things until something feels right. Put your mark on the world. Leave something behind that is unique to you.
